The IDM V304™ is used to transmit
data over the Internet Protocol (IP) and have this data carried
by radio frequencies (RF) supplied by any radio system, connections
that can be found at the local corner coffee shop almost anywhere
in the world.
The IDM V304™ has applications in any type of environment
where there is a need for ruggedized communication capability using
commercial routing standards, or a ruggedized Intel Pentium class
general purpose computer. For example the IDM V304™ may be
used when there is a need for:
 |
Ruggedized computer and
IP data router in harsh industrial environments |
 |
Sending data to and from fast moving
vehicles (i.e. aircraft, emergency response teams, trains, and
ships) |
 |
Efforts where timely data communications
are critical such as responding to time sensitive disaster efforts |
 |
In aircraft to provide internet connectivity
to passengers |
 |
Sensor data collection, for maintenance
purposes, in civilian aircraft and telemetry of the data to
the ground |
 |
Oil rigging and exploration data distribution |
 |
Security and safety related interoperability
routers/gateways |
 |
Routing between commercial satellite
links and Ethernet in harsh environments |
In-Flight Internet
Innovative Concepts has marketed and continues to market the IDM
V304™ and other of its IDM Technology® products to the
aviation market relating to the delivery of in-flight Internet on
commercial airlines. A cabled internet connection to each passenger’s
seat is delivered via Ethernet. All the cables emanate from a data
communications router installed elsewhere on the aircraft that captures
signals and processes them into and out of the plane. The IDM V304™
can serve this purpose as an off-the-shelf item and do so without
any modifications.
Flight Security and Safety
The IDM V304™ also has applications involving flight security
and safety. The IDM V304™ can transmit near real-time data
characterizing weather conditions, especially turbulence reports,
on a consistent basis that do not rely entirely upon satellite availability
or favorable atmospheric conditions. No modification of the IDM
V304™ would be required for this application.
Monitoring Passenger Behavior
The IDM V304™ could be used on civilian aircraft in the passenger
cabin area. We understand that the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) as well as the FAA is considering placing webcams throughout
the passenger cabin area to monitor passenger behavior in flight.
The IDM V304™ could be used as the data router to link the
cameras to either the flight attendant or pilot cabin areas and
to external sources. No modifications to the IDM V304™ would
be required for this application.
Supports Ethernet Data Interfaces
The IDM V304™ supports Ethernet data interfaces, the same
data interfaces found in any office environment and the same kind
that are now being installed on commercial airliners to distribute
data connections to each passenger seat. The IDM V304™ will
not only provide the onboard routing for these systems but its software
structures will also provide the multiple external interfaces which
will be necessary to process all the supporting signals carrying
data into and out of the aircraft. No modifications to the IDM V304™
would be required for this application.
Mining Operations
The IDM V304™ was built using a modular approach. The Central
Processing Module (CPM) contained in the IDM V304™ was incorporated
by the University of Utah in a mobile robot sensor that was designed
to investigate dangerous areas such as unstable mining operations
or the underside of suspect vehicles and report back its findings
over a multiplicity of communication protocols contained in the
CPM. The robot package has been successfully demonstrated by the
University at public trade shows, the most prominent of which is
that sponsored globally by the Association of Unmanned Vehicles
(AUVSI).
